Education in Nigeria is predominantly overseen by the Ministry of Education. The System, which is divided into four subgroups (Kindergarten, Primary School, Secondary School and the Tertiary Institution) has had challenges over the years whereby education policies have not been successfully implemented. This in return, has led to a decline in the sector, where the less privileged are unable to attain the most basic level of education. According to the Journal of Power, Politics and Governance, which highlights the quality of Basic Education in Nigeria, Nigeria currently possesses the largest population of out-of-school learning youth in Nigeria.

About H.O.P.E
H.O.P.E.
H.O.P.E which stands for Helping Orphans and the Poor with Education, is a non-profit arm of the Inspiration Life Community Church (ILCC). Pastor Wale Afelumo, who is the lead pastor and founder of ILCC, has a passion for Education in Nigeria. In a bid to give back to the community and help the less-privileged, He came up with the H.O.P.E Initiative which as the name implies, is focused on helping the orphans and the poor through education. The goal of this project is to be able to provide education opportunities to those who cannot afford it from primary to the tertiary level.
What H.O.P.E Represents
The vision of the H.O.P.E project is to make an impact in the lives of the less-privileged in Nigeria and beyond through providing adequate opportunities to attaining good education, thereby bringing the church into the world.
The mission of H.O.P.E is to provide the underprivileged with an unequalled opportunity of attaining quality education from the primary school, all through to the tertiary level by providing various forms of support to the children, families and the institutions within the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria as a whole and beyond.
At H.O.P.E, the goal is to provide support in the best possible way. We offer this support in different ways which include:
- Adopting a child and seeing them through school. These children will be picked from orphanages and public schools where the child’s parent is unable to foot the bills of tuition, books and school uniforms.
- Donating books and writing materials to public schools
- Helping with infrastructural projects in schools.
- Empowering teachers through trainings.
- Conducting extracurricular classes for children.
The most important part of what we do is being able to identify these people and their needs. Our beneficiaries are children in orphanages and public schools within the community. There are criteria used in selecting beneficiaries especially the children. This include but not restricted to:
- A child who is already enrolled in school (this is because prior results will help determine the child’s interest in school).
- A child from a family who absolutely is unable to cater for his/her education
- At the moment, children/families within Abuja
- An orphan
- Children within primary and secondary school level.
Background checks are conducted on the beneficiaries in order to evaluate and understand their needs.
The H.O.P.E team also monitors the progress of the beneficiary in school.
Projects
- The first H.O.P.E Project was carried out in 2017, where the books were donated to an LEA primary school in Jahi.
- Adopt A Child Project. This aim of this project is to support orphans or the poor who show a great aptitude for learning. This support covers paying for their tuition fees, monitoring their academic progress as well as mentoring them in the best possible way. The first phase of the project has already commenced.
